Search Engine Optimisation the Basics

My name is Lee Parker I am web developer and all rounder when it comes to internet technologies.  I decided that I was going to write this article because I remember many moons ago when I first started in the industry, I could never seem to find one article that spelt out the rights and wrongs of s.e.o.  So anyways here we are and here I go.

Keywords in Your Content

Keywords in your content are extremely important because google (who 90% of your search engine traffic will come from) looks for words that are relevant in your content.

Lets think about this from the searchers point of view, if you want to search for books then you will most likely search for example; fiction books, sci-fi books etc, now to be able to get a piece of the action your content must contain these keywords and some of them should be set as links this helps a little. Keyword density is another way to help, by this I mean the main keywords should appear several times on each page nicely spread throughout. This method I have found works wonders for yahoo’s search engine.

Titles

Titles must match what you have in your content.  For instance your website is about animals, the keywords are cats, dogs, rabbits. Now your title will read something like Domestic Pets | Dogs, Cats and Rabbits but always remember your title should change according to the content inside that particular page. Changing titles are a great way to hit upon different keywords that people search for.  In today’s business climate and the stern competition that’s out there when it comes to google rankings its extremely important that you target other keywords that are less competitive because unfortunately Joe bloggs cannot compete with brand x I know its not fair but it’s a fact.

Meta Tags

Although important I believe that google pay a lot less attention to these nowadays.  I think people used to abuse them but google has come along way since then. So we should move on too, create the basic meta tags and you can’t go far wrong.

Example:

<meta name=’keywords’ /><meta content=’pets rabbits dogs’ />,

<meta name=’description’ /><meta content=’This is a website about all domestic pets including dogs and rabbits and some about hamsters’ />

Links in Your Website and Structure

Links in your website are very important because they allow the googlebot or slurp yahoo’s version to crawl from one page to another on your website.  Now if you’re asking why that’s important then consider this. It’s the robot that indexes your website, if the crawler cannot get from one page to another easily then your website will not be indexed properly thus handicapping you right at the beginning of your s.e.o project.

Link Building

This would be considered by most developers or s.e.o experts to be one the most important aspects of the process.  They are many reasons why link building is excellent for your website.  Google and other major search engines use reciprocal links as a voting type of system, so if there are 20 websites out there that have your link attached to their website then they are effectively voting for your website.  Remember this though, when linking to higher ranked sites the better it is for you because they see that as a stronger vote.  For instance a vote from the guardian newspaper would be better that having one from Joe Bloggs Pet Shop you get the idea. A place I used to gain some links was Link Market try it but don’t add too any links all at once because google likes it if you gain links over time.

Well that’s it I have now give you some basic s.e.o knowledge so go out and test it on your projects, one final thing for you to think about is search engine optimisation takes time so don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t come straight the way it’s a long journey good luck to you all.  Please take a look at my site http://www.pkrstudios.co.uk
