Hamster will not run on wheel but gnaws at cage?
Hi all…. ive recently got a hamster and she will not use her wheel if she does its for a quick 4 seconds….. she gnaws at the metal cage bars and bites me if i stroke her HELP?????
1. how do i tame her…..
2. Why wont she use her wheel
3. Why does she gnaw even though she has gnaw toys
4. ( I oiled the wheel with veritable oil… non has gone any where nere her if this is relavant and i dident go fanatic and saturate every where with the oil…lol………)

I know it sounds funny here – but she’s bored!
I have a hamster that loves her wheel, loves her “toys” but also loves to gnaw…….!
She is extremely friendly, is exceptionally tame yet she gnaws. The only thing that can stop her gnawing is her hamster ball.
When ever anyone walks past the cage she runs to the door and sits waiting. If you don’t open the bars she will gnaw to get out. I spoke to a vet about this and while hamsters live alone, they can actually love human company – and mine craves it to the point she will actually follow you on the floor!
To tame your hamster you need to do it slowly to build up trust. While she is gathering up her food use a feather to gently stroke her back. When she learns this will not hurt her you can then move onto doing it with a pencil. Do this several times a day then eventually use the back of your finger to stroke her. By this time she should be used to being touched. The next stage is to open the door and let her come out onto your hand. It’s important you don’t grab her and keep very still. By now she should recognise your scent and not be scared. You will soon find that she will want to some out and be held! Even my three year old daughter can handle her and they are great “buddies”!
Once you have tamed her you should be able to put her into a ball and let her have some freedom.
Hamsters can be great fun, mine would happily live out of her cage given the chance!!
